Volunteering
How To Volunteer Volunteer Fundraising Fundraising CalendarVolunteering has been crucial to Aware Defeat Depression since its inception and though the organisation has grown with time and now has nine paid staff, volunteers remain at the heart of our services. Our volunteer team has expanded year on year and at present approximately seventy people from all walks of life choose to volunteer their time for Aware.
Our support groups and telephone helpline are two key services provided almost entirely by volunteers and our board of directors is made up of volunteers representing sufferers, carers and mental health professionals. Volunteers also support our Aware through fundraising and administrative work. In an average month, approximately 250 hours are donated by Aware Defeat Depression volunteers.

Volunteer Fundraising
Although we get some statutory funding towards delivering our community services, it is not sufficient and we rely on voluntary fundraising from the public to maintain our listening ear helpline, our support groups and our education and training programmes. We welcome all the assistance we can get with our fundraising activities, so there are a variety of things you can get involved with, from hosting your own event to helping out with some of our scheduled fundraising activities on the calendar below. This Autumn we are looking for people to run (walk) and raise money for us by entering the Tesco Waterside Half Marathon in Derry on 13 September 2008. We are one of the two nominated charities for the Marathanon and we need as many relay teams of three to run for us as possible, to help us achieve our fundraising goal of £6,000. We have training plans, dietary advice and fundraising tips to help you plus sponsor forms, so please contact us for these on 028 9032 1734 or email Alison@aware-ni.org. Alternatively you can go to www.derrycity.gov.uk/halfmarathon and download sponsor forms and training guides. Registration fees are paid directly to Derry City Council and you can register on the day.
All we ask is that entrants try and raise £50 each for us in sponsorship if they enter as individual of £150 per relay team. If you are a UK taxpayer we can claim an extra 28p of Gift Aid from the government, for every £1 you raise so your efforts will really make a difference to us. All funds will be used to help us maintain our community based support groups and helpline for people with depression and may help save someone’s life in 2008, by preventing them from suicide.
